Admission Procedure Exchange
Would you like to spend a semester studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie? That is possible. Every year we accept over 60 exchange students, and many small or large projects are organized in collaboration with academies outside of The Netherlands.
Future collaborations: Our academy is very keen on collaborating with other academies from around the world. Unfortunately, at this point we are working with a restricted list of contracted academies and cannot take any new partners into consideration, due to an overwhelming amount of interest of academies abroad. For years, we have been dealing with a high disproportion between the number of incoming and outgoing students. Due to current decisions from the government and smaller budgets for departments, we can accept fewer students for incoming exchange. Our Graphic Design department and Photography department receive the highest amount of applications, but have the least amount of outgoing exchange students. As a consequence, a number of worthy applicants will have to be disappointed this year.

Erasmus programme
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is affiliated with the Erasmus program. This means that, if your academy is also affiliated with the Erasmus-programme, you will can apply for an Erasmus scholarship and use it for your exchange. Please check with your own academy for details for scholarship application. The Rietveld Academie is not affiliated with the SWB - Science Without Borders program.
Semesters academic year 2013
Our academic year is divided in two semesters:
The Spring semester runs from January 1st 2013 till August 31st 2013, and the Fall semester from September 1st till December 31st 2013.
An exchange can only take place within either of these two semesters. The maximum duration of an exchange at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie is one semester.

Estimated semesters:
Spring semester: the estimated exchange period runs from January 7 till June 29 2013. The end exam exhibition starts on July 4, 2013.
Fall semester: the estimated exchange period runs from August 28 till December 20 2013.

- Christmas holiday December 23 2012-January 6 2013
- Spring holiday February 18-25 2013
- May holiday April 29 – May 6 2013
- Summer holiday July 15 – August 28 2013
Admission procedure
In order to be able to be admitted to an exchange programme, you must submit the following:
A fully and correctly completed application form, including two passport photographs.
A copy of your passport.
- A portfolio.
The portfolio should contain
a wide variety of work: original or (preferably) photographs or prints of recent work, no more than 3 years old.
It is important that you do not just submit finished results. In order to better assess your suitability for our academy, it is important that you also include sketches and unfinished plans and ideas. There is no set quantity of pieces to submit.
It is recommended that you submit a reasonable quantity and a selection that provides a good impression of your recent visual work (around 30 to 100 pieces). These can be drawings, paintings, photographs, collages, graphics, textiles, garments, ceramics, items of jewellery, floor plans, models or texts.
Work submitted by e-mail or via the Internet will not be considered. Films can be submitted on DVD or as a link to a website as part of the portfolio.The portfolio should also contain a brief table of contents and explanation of the work.
A covering letter. Send a printed covering letter including the following information: personal details; your name, address, telephone numbers, e-mail address, date of birth, nationality, prior education and courses taken. Please also enclose copies of your diplomas.

- your reasons for choosing the Rietveld Academie, your expectations regarding the study programme, your future plans, your development thus far and your interests (For example; museums, film, music, dance, theatre, collecting, philosophy).
Returning of portfolio’s
Portfolios will only be returned if sufficient international reply coupons have been enclosed to be able to return them. In most countries, these coupons can be purchased at the post office.
The value of the coupons must represent the same amount as the costs of sending the package to the Rietveld Academie. If you are unable to obtain international reply coupons, be sure to enclose a sufficient amount in Euros. If the package does not include sufficient coupons/money, the portfolio will be stored for six months, after which the portfolio will be destroyed!
Deadlines
The deadline for registration for the Fall- semester is April 1st.

Portfolios received after these dates will NOT be considered.

Visa
Members of the following countries are exempt from MMV visa requirements:
All EU/EEA countries:Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
For students from Bulgaria and Romania it may have some benefits in the future to apply for a residence permit.

Bilateral Agreements
De Rietveld Academie heeft met een aantal instellingen bilaterale uitwisselingscontracten. Als jij momenteel studeert aan een instelling die niet in de onderstaande lijst is opgenomen, is het niet mogelijk een semester als exchange student te studeren aan onze academie. In enkele uitzonderlijke gevallen worden portfolio's niet afkomstig van onze partnerinstellingen wel in behandeling genomen. Dit gebeurt pas nadat alle kandidaten van partners beoordeeld zijn en er exchange-plekken over zijn. Dit blijkt in de praktijk echter niet vaak het geval te zijn. Als je toch interesse hebt als reserve-kandidaat aangemerkt te worden, vragen we je dit per email te bevestigen.
